IIT Madras Placement Deferred due to Jayalalitha’s Death

The state of Tamil Nadu is in chaos after the demise of its Chief Minister J Jayalalitha. The development has also hit hard on IIT Madras as the institute had to suspend the placements that were going on.

The minister passed away on Monday evening, December 5 following which Manu Santhanam, Training and Placements Cell Advisor, IIT Madras, said that the placements will be resumed on December 8.

This is not the first time that the placements of IIT Madras have been delayed. Owing to the floods that hit Chennai in 2015, the institute had to postpone the placements that were later scheduled for January 6 to January 16, 2016.

Santhanam further said that ever since the news of Jayalalithaa’s cardiac arrest started floating in the media, companies were unsure about coming to the campus for placements. May of the firms even called the campus and asked whether it was safe to travel to the campus or not, added Santhanam.

Campus placements across all the IITs began on December 1. So far 400 students have been hired and numerous offers have been made at IIT Madras itself. Some of the prominent recruiters who offered highest packages this year are Microsoft, Oracle and Goldman Sachs.

Changing placement trends in 2016, some of the PSUs also participated in the prime slots of placement while some of them recruited students even before the commencement of the official placements. Coal India, HPCL, ONGC, Midhani (Miniratna) and BEL are some of the PSUs that will be visiting IIT Madras this year.

After the death of Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, the state government announced a three-day holiday for all educational institutions following which classes at IIT Madras have also been canceled.
