IIT Madras Plans to Introduce Data Science in Government Schools
IIT Madras has joined hands with NPTEL to introduce the concept of Data Science in government schools to make students equipped with the basic concepts of Data Science.
The team of IIT Madras adjoined the chief minister Mr. M. K Stalin with the proposal of introducing Data Science to the students in government schools on Monday. This 4-year program was introduced last year and is now accessible to all. Students who have applied for this program are provided with the study materials and can apply for the course for succeeding in the qualifying exams.
The director of IIT Madras Mr. V. Kamakoti, coordinator of NPTEL ( National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning) Mr. Vignesh Muthuvijayan, Registrar Jane Prasad, and Mr. Koshy Varghese, the Dean of Administration, attended the entire meeting with the IIT M team.
10,000 students are enrolled in the program, & another 5000 are in the process of qualifying for qualifiers shortly. Out of them, 2,100 are from Tamil Nadu and the other 370 aspirants have done their schooling from government-aided institutions. Mr. Vigensh also added that the aim is to make these 370 students to 1,000 from the government schools.
The main focus is to reach more students from the rural areas, as it will help a lot in getting jobs and up-skilling of the students. Students can apply or pursue this course while doing their jobs or studying in their respective schools and colleges. The training provided will be certified by IIT Madras. He also ensured in giving high-quality training to the students.
Mr. Kamakoti affirmed that the main aim is to connect to the students in the state and ensure the teachers as well as the students that IITs are there in their reach and not too far. There is an active work with the state government to enable BSc Data Science as a qualifying exam, unlike JEE which is a selection exam and is looking forward to working with the education department. Data Science is going to be one of the most trending courses in the coming times and there will be no meagreness in the jobs for the coming 10- 15 years.

The coordinator of NPTEL added that the students will be able to study for 4 weeks from the study material supplied by IIT Madras before appearing for a test from the test centre.
