IIT Madras Collaborates with THSTI to Work on Public Health Care Issues

On February 22, 2019, an agreement was signed between IITM (Indian Institute of Technology, Madras) and THSTI (Translational Health Science and Technology Institute) during a conclave which was held at the institute. The agreement was signed with an aim to address public health issues and to make effective use of technology to predict and control adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Speaking of this cooperation, faculty of Biotechnology Department of IIT-M, Kartik Raman said that THSTI is a skilful agency which conducts studies on various diseases and the problems associated with mother and child care. The objective of the collaboration between THSTI and IIT Madras is to analyze the data collected by THSTI by using data science and other technologies and to design models which can ultimately help doctors reduce the maternal and child mortality rates Pan-India.

Issues such as pre-term babies, gestational diabetes, the impact of environmental pollution on the maternal as well as the baby healthcare, nutrition issues and immune response to vaccines can be solved by working together, he stated. He went on to elaborate that the collaboration will examine the reasons and build India-specific models to deal with such issues.

Himanshu Sinha, an Associate Professor at the Department of Biotechnology, IIT Madras agreed indicated that they are very excited about this collaboration between IIT Madras and THSTI as it will help them to get a detailed data sheet on the pregnancy outcomes which will ultimately assist them to design a better model.

Gagandeep Kang, executive director of THSTI, while highlighting the significance of this cooperation added that the ability to understand, anticipate and manage public health is changing expeditiously with the implementation of brand new technologies. A thorough inspection of the massive data sets produced by these studies is an important need for which there has been limited capacity in India.
