IIT and NIT Graduates to Teach Engineering Students in Backward Areas: Javadekar
- HRD Ministry selected 1,225 M.Tech and Ph.D. students from IITs, NITs, IISERs and IIITs to teach in engineering colleges located in backward areas.
- 53 engineering colleges across 11 states and UTs have been identified for this initiative.
With an aim to make quality education accessible to engineering students in backward areas, the Ministry of Human Resource Development has taken a noble step. HRD Minister, Mr. Prakash Javadekar announced that 1,200 graduates from National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are selected to teach in 53 engineering colleges across 11 states and union territories. All these colleges are mostly located in remote or backward areas, revealed Javadekar.
Adding further, HRD Minister pointed that IIT and NIT students teaching in backward areas will prove to be an efficient measure to improve the quality of education. Through this initiative, over one lakh engineering students would be benefitted. According to plan, each IIT and NIT student selected under this initiative will be paid Rs. 70,000 per month. The government is spending over Rs. 375 crores for this initiative, he highlighted.

Mr. Javadekar mentioned that 60% faculty positions are vacant in 53 engineering colleges, located in backward areas across 11 states and UTs. These colleges have failed to attract qualified teachers. Therefore, the government itself has taken a decision and selected 1,200 NIT and IIT graduates, he explained.
Javadekar expressed that he was happy with the response received by the call given by HRD Ministry inviting M.Tech and Ph.D. students to work in backward areas. Over 5,000 students from the premier institutions applied for this noble initiative.
HRD Ministry has taken this initiative as a part of TEQIP (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme) Phase III. Apart from IITs and NITs, students from IISERs and IIITs were also selected for this initiative.

A total of 1,225 students selected for teaching programme will work in engineering institutes, located in the following states: -
- Rajasthan
- Bihar
- Madhya Pradesh
- Jharkhand
- Uttar Pradesh
- Assam
- Odisha
- Tripura
- Jammu & Kashmir
- Andaman & Nicobar
- Uttaranchal
Out of 1,225 teachers, 301 teachers will teach in 11 institutes located in Rajasthan, 210 teachers will teach in seven institutes located in Bihar, 194 teachers will teach in seven institutes located in Madhya Pradesh and 191 teachers will teach in six institutes in Jharkhand.
