Indian Institute of Technology - Patna students have won applauds for their outstanding performance in ‘American Society of Mechanical Engineers - Human Powered Vehicle Challenge and Student Professional Development Conference’ organized recently at the Vellore Institute of Technology University - Chennai.
The IIT-Patna team won the 4th and 5th position in design and innovation respectively in the competition in which a total of 50 teams participated. The participations were from India as well as abroad.
The event was organized under Mechnovate '16, encompassing various events of mechanical department.
The main challenge and the highlight of the event were to design and build ‘Human-powered vehicles’ based on a no of parameters such as the speed and the energy required.
The IITP team was led by Haroon Rashid. The vehicle designed was a semi-recumbent cycle having features not available in a traditional, regular cycle. This human-powered vehicle includes several innovative and safety features.
- Multi-gear system to increase power
- Circular steering
- Uses less power than a regular cycle
- Ultrasonic sensors to alert the rider of obstacles
- Adjustable seat
The cycle can run for an average distance of 9 to 20kmph. The maximum speed that the team members have been able to attain is 26kmph.
