IIT Placements Witness 10% Drop this Year
Even though the number of companies which are recruiting is high, the number of employment offers did not increase.
The placements at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) commenced on December 1, 2016, and this year, most of the IITs are witnessing a 10% drop in the number of offers. Even though the number of companies which are recruiting is high, the number of employment offers did not increase as compared to last year.
For instance, at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, a total number of 300 companies registered for placements. Last year, around 280 companies visited the campus. Similarly, at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, a total number of 200 companies registered for placements whereas it was only 150 last year.

Although the number of companies visiting for recruiting students is high, the number of employment opportunities did not increase, and it came down by 10% compared to last year. There are two reasons for this drop. One of the reasons is the revised recruitment plans by the firms, and the other is an increase in the number of IITs. Currently, there are 23 IITs in India.
It is apt to consider that most of the companies have changed their recruitment plans. This year, IIT Guwahati is witnessing 20% drop in the number of offers. For instance, WhatsApp has offered only six employment opportunities this year while it offered twelve last year. The process of recruitment by WhatsApp has undergone some changes which led to a decline in the offers.

Similarly, IIT Kharagpur has been facing the same issue. So far, 450 offers have been made by recruiters in the first five days whereas 500 offers were put across last year.
Some of the experts are of the opinion that the number of IITs have gone up to 23 and most of the recruiters are preferring newer IITs. On the other hand, the current economic scenario is not satisfactory which might be one of the reasons for the decline in a number of offers.
However, IIT-Roorkee and IIT-Kanpur did not witness a drop in the number of offers or any increase in the number of offers. Placement officers of both the institutes expressed that the current situation is satisfactory and a number of opportunities are expected to increase in the coming days.
