After two decades, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has opened its doors again for non-engineering students. In order to plug the demand of the industry for students from various academic backgrounds, IIT Roorkee has now started to accept enrollments to management courses by students who are not from an Engineering background.

IIT Roorkee started its first batch of MBA under the Department of Management Studies (DoMS) in 1998. The first batch included a total of 57 students, out of which, seven were international students. This batch had 25 engineers and the remaining students were from different academic backgrounds like Management, Science, Art, Commerce, Agriculture, Home Science and Hotel Management. The selection of non-engineering students was discontinued by the institute after the first batch, the officials from the institute said.

The Director of IIT Roorkee, Ajit K Chaturvedi said that for today’s industry, it is important to hire students from diversified backgrounds. With the help of this move, the institute can manage to bridge the gap between the available talent pool and the demand for skilled candidates belonging to diverse academic backgrounds. To this, a senior teacher from the institute added that the four non-engineering students who have joined the programme in July made up about 10 per cent of the total first-year students. He said that the next target is to maintain the male-female ration in the classes.

The Head of the Department of Management Studies, M K Barua talked about the target of this new initiative saying that it will help facilitate collaborative knowledge sharing and learning. Stating the reason behind this move, he said that the change was made taking the demand of the industry into account.

Because of opening the gates for non-engineers, the institute will be witnessing the cross-sharing of knowledge among graduates. The commerce students will help engineering students in getting a deeper understanding of the financial concepts. In return, they can help commerce students with their technical expertise.
