IIT Roorkee Sets Up New Design Innovation Centre
IIT Roorkee has launched a new Design Innovation Centre (DIC) named Navonmesh with the support of the HRD Ministry. The centre will aim at innovating designs that can improve the quality of life and solve environment-related problems. Read more below.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has recently inaugurated Navonmesh - it's new Design Innovation Centre (DIC). The entire project worth Rs. 10 crores was funded by the MHRD i.e. the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India. The primary agenda behind setting up the new centre is to focus on and address the key issues of the Himalayan Region with the help of available resources so as to cater to the National Priorities.
The Director of the institute, Professor Ajit Chaturvedi revealed some of the objectives of setting up an exclusive Design Innovation Centre at IIT Roorkee as listed below:
- To encourage technical as well as non-technical colleges can mentor and support the activities of the centre and help in tackling the issues of the Himalayan Region.
- To help the farmers to facilitate them to increase their growth and productivity through new means.
- To develop a new culture among the stakeholders and at the same time address the issues of the common man.
- To develop new and innovative designs as well as region-specific products to enhance and improve the quality of life.
- To produce 'green furniture' with the help of forest wastes to lower the impact and hazards caused due to forest fires.
- To make technology and tools which is accessible to make human life easier and to solve environment-related problems.

Apart from the above-mentioned objectives, the DIC will also introduce study programmes that will include undergraduate, postgraduate elective courses, masters courses in Industry Design & Innovation Management, modular programmes, minor specialisations such as Innovation Management & Product Design etc.
