IIT Roorkee to Enroll Female Candidates under SAKUNTALA Fellowship for Full-Time PhD
IIT Roorkee has launched a unique initiative called SAKUNTALA Fellowship, which will allow deserving female students for admission into the IIT without having to sit the GATE, CEED, or other entrance exams. Check eligibility and selection process here.
IIT Roorkee: SAKUNTALA (Scheme for Aspirants of Knowledge UNderTALent Advancement) Fellowship is a unique initiative undertaken by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee. Under this fellowship, deserving and talented female candidates will be enrolled at IIT Roorkee for PhD programmes in an effort to make higher education more accessible to female engineering students at the institute.
Starting with the first admission cycle of the year 2022 in the Autumn Semester, women candidates of Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) who are currently studying engineering courses or who have already graduated will be able to apply for admission into the IIT Roorkee PhD programmes under this fellowship programme if they meet the eligibility criteria.
SAKUNTALA Fellowship programme was suggested during the Institute Research Committee's 52nd meeting on November 30, 2021, and was approved by the Institute's 89th Senate on December 9, 2021.

“SAKUNTALA Fellowship, offered by IIT Roorkee, is a unique initiative in the Indian higher education system which will help advance the engineering careers of aspiring females,” the official Twitter account of IIT Roorkee tweeted the words of Professor Apurbba Kumar Sharma, the Dean of Academic Affairs at IIT Roorkee. He continued, “This initiative will benefit many talented and deserving female graduates from CFTIs who fail to appear in National Level Exams like GATE, CEED, etc., owing to various reasons."
"This effort was launched by IIT Roorkee in order to increase the number of female research scholars in our Engineering departments.” IIT Roorkee Director, Ajit K Chaturvedi, said. “We expect it to have a noticeable impact, and we hope that many more institutions will adopt this or a similar programme to enhance female diversity in engineering fields."

SAKUNTALA Fellowship Eligibility Criteria
- Any female applicant with a BTech, BE, BArch, or BDesA degree from any Centrally Funded Technical Institute with a minimum CGPA of 8.5 or above on the 10-point scale would be eligible for direct admission to a PhD programme under this initiative.
Female candidates enrolling to the Institute's PhD programmes wouldn't need a GATE, CEED, or any other National Level Exam scores under the SAKUNTALA Fellowship, which is a significant benefit for aspirants to higher education.
SAKUNTALA Fellowship Selection process
- The selection for admission will be carried out through interviews in the corresponding departments or other academic units. The Institute has also allowed the admission of eligible candidates without any restriction on the number of seats.
