One out of four IIT aspirants who had registered themselves for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced in the year 2019 belonged to the southern states and followed by the IIT Delhi zone. Students coming from most western states, consisting of the third-highest pool of candidates have registered under the IIT Bombay zone.

Data from different IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) shows that the highest number of applicants who took the next level exam after qualifying JEE (Main) was from the south region. Academicians have claimed that many of these candidates are Telugu speaking students.

There were a total of 1.75 lakh candidates who registered themselves for JEE (Advanced) this year. Out of these, around 43,000 candidates were from IIT Hyderabad zone and 32,000 were from the Delhi NCR Region comprising Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan which come under IIT Delhi zone. These were followed by IIT Bombay zone which had 30,000 candidates from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Goa.

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced was conducted on 27th May this year and the results are expected to be out by 14th June. Till the year 2016, the western region (i.e. IIT Bombay zone) received maximum students taking the test for admission to different IITs.

A professor from IIT Bombay said that these stats are because a lot of students take the exam from Jaipur, including those who register from the coaching hub of Kota in Rajasthan. Another professor who used to be associated with JEE (Advanced) said that many students from different regions migrate to the coaching hubs in Kota and Hyderabad which has attributed to the rise in numbers of these zones.

However, the Director of IIT Hyderabad, U B Desai, denied such assumptions and said that the largest pool of students who qualified JEE (Mains) are Telugu speaking and that Hyderabad’s coaching hub is not the only reason as to why the numbers have increased.
