IITR (Indian Institute of Toxicological Research) would be suggesting remedial measures for curbing air pollution in the pre-monsoon report which will be released on June 6th to mark World Environment Day. Director, Alok Dhawan said, they were compiling the air pollution levels for the past 20 years and would release the compiled report in the latter part of this year.
Dhawan said that apart from giving the pollution levels in different areas of Lucknow, the premonsoon report would suggest remedial measures to control pollution. “Garbage burning in the morning is a common sight and this practice should be banned because it releases a lot of particulate matter in the air, increasing the pollution levels,” he said.
The Director said that they would also be measuring the wind velocity this time for the pre-monsoon report. On being asked whether the IITR would expand the number of sites where air pollution was being checked as the city limits has increased. The Director said that they are likely to take it up next year. The release of the premonsoon report on air and noise pollution levels of the city is an annual feature and it covers residential, commercial and industrial areas of the city.
The Indian Institute of Toxicological Research will also be organising a programme on World Environment Day on June 5th. The main speaker will be Professor P Balarama, former Director of Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore. The programme will be presided over by Indranil Manna, Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. The Director said that they are likely to take it up next year.
