IITs are Still Urban-Centric : IIT Guwahati
The IITs are still urban-centric where only 25% of students are coming from the countryside.
Even though there are many coaching centres for the IIT JEE exam, 52% of the students who qualified IIT-JEE relied on self-study. According to the reports of IIT Guwahati, a total number of 5,539 students out of 10,576 who secured admissions in IITs did not join in any coaching centre and prepared for the exam on their own. On the other hand, a total number of 4,711 students who were successful in exam attended coaching institutes.

According to the analysis of IIT Guwahati, most of the students aspiring for IITs are from urban areas. The IITs are still urban-centric where only 25% of students are coming from the countryside.

The analysis also focused on the occupation of parents from urban areas. It clearly indicated around 10,000 students who qualified JEE (Advanced) are from upper middle class.
This year, Kota which is famous for IIT coaching centres contributed 1,646 students. Tamil Nadu was not among the top 12 contributors. Once upon a time, Tamil Nadu was one of the major contributors. The report also stated that the students who studied CBSC done well in the examination.
