IITs Plan to Invite More Students from ASEAN Countries
IITs Launched the programme to bring 1,000 students from ASEAN Countries. The programme Flags off on 16th September 2019. The IITs hope that this will be helpful to improve the global ranking as well.
The 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) plans to invite more researchers and academics from this year from ASEAN Countries according to the MHRD Directives. This step will be complementary to the aim of IITs to increase the admissions from the foreign countries in IITs. This step will also help to boost research by involving foreign students in the research works in the institutes.
The program has now been officially launched by The External Affairs Minister of India, Mr S Jaishankar and Minister of Human Resource Development (HRD) Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on 25th July made a plan under which as many ad 1,000 students from countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam etc would be given research fellowships to undertake research projects in the IITs.
A senior IIT official informed that the IITs are aiming to bestow 1,000 research fellowships to academics of the ASEAN countries. The scheme which will be a part of the IIT system itself will have a sanctioned budget of 300 crores. The IIT Delhi has been chosen to be the nodal body for granting research fellowship to the students coming from ASEAN countries. December 2019 will be witnessing the first batch for the policy.
The IITs will set up their own resources, these scholars will be provided with living expenses. The committee is led by Higher Education Secretary Mr R Subrahmanyam, that worked on the outlines of the plan.

This initiative is not new, in the recent past, the IITs have tried to invite students from SAARC nations except Pakistan for academics and researches in the institute. Though the plan did not see much success. An official informed that the ASEAN countries are traditional friends with India and India has historical linkages as well those span centuries. Many of the countries have remarkably good educational systems, so IITs can expect quality students from the countries. He added that the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs will also work hand-in-hand for providing fast visa approval to the students who are coming to IITs for research. This will also help IITs to climb up in global rankings.

Eminent educationist, Prof I.M. Kapahy has said that IITs as the most prominent science and technology institutes have the high potentiality to lead the country’s educational reputation globally. It will be efficient to be recognised as an ASEAN research hub.
