IITs Bringing in Foreign Teachers and Students to Improve Global Ranking

Another attempt by IITs to establish their brand value at global level includes hiring of teachers and professors from abroad. This move will not only help the IITs ace the global ranking list but will also provide a solution to the shortage of quality teachers in India. Also, foreign students will also be offered a chance to apply for top notch IITs.

In a meeting comprising of directors from top institutes in the country, attracting faculty and students from abroad was given utmost priority. According to director of IIT Bhubaneswar, R V Rajakumar said that this decision will help in dealing with two most important issues.

• Global ranking
• Shortage of quality teachers

IIT Bhubaneswar director pointed out that very few students from abroad take admission in the top IITs despite the fact that 20% of the total seats are reserved for them at both undergraduate and post graduate level. One of the major reason behind this is the lack of awareness about IIT among the students living abroad.

He also said that in foreign, the only offshore JEE Advanced center is made available in Dubai and not in any other country which is limiting the number of students applying for IIT. Attempts should be made to set more offshore centers for JEE Advanced in several other countries which can help students from different countries to sit for the exam.

He further said that the decision of hiring faculty from abroad is on the very first stage and the proposal regarding the same will be sent to IIT council. Also, since the hiring and recruitment involved monetary transactions, final decision will be in the hands of the government.

Currently, IITs are facing a shortage of 30% of the total faculty required, that they believe can be sorted out, by bringing in foreign faculty in the institutes.
