Covid-19 Effect: IITs Likely to Conduct Autumn Semester Online
IITs are figuring out possibilities to conduct online classes for the upcoming autumn semester. IIT Madras has already sent an e-mail to students confirming online classes for the next semester.
IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) are planning to conduct upcoming autumn semester online/ virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As the number of Covid-19 cases has been increasing gradually, conducting offline classes might not be possible until the year-end. Therefore, IITs are figuring out possibilities to hold online classes for the autumn semester. The government has constituted a committee to devise a common strategy for re-opening of IITs.
Online or virtual classes will take place for continuing UG students or those already enrolled. On the other hand, IITs will make sure that the campus life and other activities will not have a break. The institutes will soon bring back the Ph.D. students.
While online learning might be a challenge for most of the students due to the non-availability of digital devices and internet. For such students, IITs are looking for alternative methods. In order to make the online learning most effective, IITs are making some changes in the curriculum, and as per these changes, lab work will take place in the spring semester instead of the autumn semester.
IIT Madras has already sent an e-mail to students officially stating that online classes will take for one more semester due to the ongoing situation, and students will have to cope up with the virtual or online learning. The premier institute also indicated that it would bring back Ph.D. students as soon as possible.

At IIT Bombay, the lecturers are taking suggestions from students on how effectively the institute can implement online classes.
At IIT Guwahati, almost 150 Ph.D. students received an invitation to return to the campus. So far, only 12 Ph.D. students have returned.

In all, students who are going to enrol in IITs or who are already enrolled will have to rely on online classes until the government permits educational institutes to re-open.
While the JEE Advanced is scheduled to take place on August 23, 2020, the classes for the first-year students will begin only in October. The JoSAA counselling for admission in IITs and NITs will take place in September.
