IITs and IIMs to Seek Exemption from 10% EWS Quota for 2019-20 Session
IITs and IIMs are reluctant to implement 10% quota for EWS from the upcoming academic session. Inadequate infrastructure is one of the major reasons for not implement 10% quota for EWS.
IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) and IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) are planning to seek exemption from 10% quota for EWS in the general category for the 2019-20 admission session.
IITs are reluctant to implement 10% quota for EWS due to the lack of infrastructure. IITs have to increase seats in order to implement 10% EWS quota. However, intake hike may not be possible in IITs for the upcoming academic session due to inadequate infrastructure.
On the other hand, IIMs are not ready to implement 10% quota for EWS due to the absence of EWS option in CAT 2018 application form. CAT 2018 was already conducted, and the results for the same were declared. Therefore, IIMs cannot increase intake for the academic session 2019-20 and implement 10% EWS quota.
Director of one of the IITs pointed out that IIT campuses are residential, and increase in intake will force the institutes to increase hostel seats. Such measures cannot be taken in such short notice due to the inadequate infrastructure.

On the other hand, the HRD Ministry order does not mention that the number of seats available for the unreserved category must be reduced. If there is a clause to reduce unreserved seats, there is no necessity to increase seats, as some of the existing seats under unreserved category shall be diverted to quota, he explained.

State universities are also not ready to implement 10% EWS quota from the upcoming academic session due to the lack of infrastructure.
