IITs and IISc Likely to Centralize Counselling Process for M.Tech & Ph.D. Admissions
The next meeting of IIT Council is scheduled to take place on August 21, 2018. Proposal regarding centralized admission process for M.Tech and Ph.D. courses at IITs and IISc to be discussed at the meeting.
IISc Bangalore and IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) are planning to centralize the counselling process for the admission to M.Tech and Ph.D. courses. The proposal regarding the same will be taken up for discussion at IIT Council meeting that is scheduled for August 21, 2018. At present, IITs and IISc hold a centralized admission process for UG (Under Graduate) courses. The same system is expected to be implemented for M.Tech and Ph.D. courses.
IITs and IISc consider GATE score for the admission to M.Tech and Ph.D. courses. As per the existing admission process, students need to apply for each institute separately and they will have to appear for another round of test/ interview conducted by individual institutions. The candidates face difficulty if multiple institutes schedule their selection process on the same day. As a result, many of the students with a good GATE score are losing a chance to get admission in top/ popular institutes.

With an aim to regulate such hassles, the premier institutes have come up with a proposal to introduce centralized counselling for the admission to M.Tech and Ph.D. courses.
Another proposal with regard to the GATE exam to be discussed at the meeting is the constitution of a committee of experts to suggest suitable measures for planning recruitment as per the admission/ academic schedule of IITs. At present, quite a few candidates pursuing M.Tech in IITs are being picked up by PSUs based on GATE score. Therefore, these students are leaving the course midway to take up jobs in PSUs. As a result, seats are remaining vacant in the premier institutes.
