IITs, IISERs to Mentor Nearby Schools in Maths and Science: Javadekar

Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister HRD, has said that prestigious institutions such as IITs, IISERs, and other universities in the country will provide mentoring to schools that are situated near their campuses.

An initiative like this will ensure that school students do not lag behind in subjects like Science and Mathematics, he said.

Javadekar, while speaking on the sidelines of an event, highlighted the importance of subjects like Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and technology in the 21st century. He insisted that mentoring students right from the primary schools can foster research tendency among them.

He said that each institute/university will mentor 10 to 15 nearby schools and will also ensure that the students are given proper training in subjects like Maths and Science. The institutes will come up with innovative ideas to make the learning more fun and entertaining.

As per him, the right curriculum and structure are essential in cultivating the interest of primary school students in subjects like Mathematics and Science. This will be helpful for them in the long run, he said.

He further talked about how studies over the years have shown that once a student lag behinds in a subject like Mathematics or Science, it becomes very difficult for him/her to catch up. The gap increases with time and they tend to fall behind further. Therefore, it is important for students to know about the importance of such subjects in professional life.

Javadekar shared his views during the inauguration of exhibitions at the Science City as part of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit.
