COVID 19 Effect: IITs M.Tech Degree Programme Duration Likely be Reduced to 18 Months
Standing Committee of IIT Council (SCIC) has suggested reducing the duration of M.Tech degree programme to 18 months. The Covid-19 outbreak and delay of academic session are the reasons for the reduction in duration of M.Tech.
Looking at the current scenario of COVID 19 pandemic, the sub-committee of Standing Committee of IIT Council (SCIC) has proposed various strategies that can be followed at IITs for the upcoming academic year. One among them is the change in the duration of M.Tech degree programme. There are high chances that the duration of M.Tech course at the IITs may be reduced to 18 months. The normal duration of the M.Tech degree programme is 24 months. The final decision of the proposal will be approved by the Senate of each IITs and the Ministry of HRD. The committee has mentioned that such a decision is taken to ensure the flexibility in conducting the programme in 3 semesters rather than 4.

The first-year students (new students) will join all PG degree programme including the M.Tech programme at the institute from December 2020 to January 2021. The classes of the first semester of 2020 -21 for all courses will be conducted in online mode with short term and smaller weightage evaluations.
The committee has also recommended that the projects of B.Tech, M.Tech and all other degree programmes must be theoretically-based rather than experimental for time being. However, it can be converted into an experimental work later in the next year, if the situation is normal.
IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Jodhpur has confirmed that the upcoming semester will begin in August or September in online mode. No face to face classes will be conducted.

Ramgopal Rao, Director IIT Delhi has already informed in the IIT Delhi Senate, 211th meeting that the institute will go with the Standing Committee of IIT Council (SCIC) sub-committee recommendations to conduct the autumn semester (2020)
Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, the Director of IIT Bombay has earlier said they have decided to conduct the next semester in online mode.
