While the number of Covid-19 cases has been increasing rapidly across the country, there have been several campaigns on twitter and other social media platforms with regard to the cancellation of JEE Main April 2020 exam. Most of the parents and students are of the opinion that conducting the entrance exam at this critical stage is unsafe. However, the government has not taken a call on the cancellation of the exam. According to sources, the government may opt for rescheduling of JEE Main if the situation gets worse in July.

On the other hand, several IITs are not in favour of cancelling JEE Main exam. Director of IIT Ropar, Sarit K Das revealed that cancellation of the national-level exam is not an option as admission to IITs and NITs is a serious matter. Most students work hard to crack this exam, and it is not fair to let their preparation go in vain. The government may consider the option of rescheduling exam, he added.

Adding further, Mr. Sarit K Das explained that the delayed academic session could be compensated by reducing the summer breaks and other holidays. Conducting the admission process for IITs based on Class 12th marks instead of JEE Main will lead to dilution of standards of these institutes. JEE Advanced is conducted to filter the best talent for admission in IITs, and cancelling these entrance exams does not make sense, he expressed.

It is also not fair to consider the JEE Main January 2020 percentile for admission in NITs, as most students consider the first edition of JEE as a practice test. Based on the performance in the first edition of JEE Main, students prepare accordingly for the second edition.

In all, conducting the entrance exam is the best option to filter the best talent for admission in premier institutes. However, the final decision is taken only after the assessment of Covid-19 conditions across the country.
