Discussions related to dropouts in IITs have become common in all IIT council meetings. It has been a great concern for both the government and the institutes from the past few years. Most of the students are leaving IITs midway as they are unable to tolerate the stress.

V. Ram Gopal Rao, Professor at IIT Delhi, explained that they simply do not admit the students. Instead, they provide strong counselling to them. If any student faces trouble or is uncomfortable, they can take the help of the counselling centre which has been set up exclusively for students. On the other hand, most of the students leave IITs midway as they face difficulties in the medium of instruction. Special arrangements have been made to tackle this problem.

He further added that students who leave the course midway are mostly postgraduate students. They take jobs in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and ditch the course in between. IITs have conveyed to PSUs asking them to let students complete their course first.
