IITs Request MHRD One Extra Year to Implement EWS Quota
The governemnt directed all central universities of India to incorporate EWS Quota earlier this year by increasing the total number of seats by 25% in the next two years. However, IITs fail in completing the deadlines and demand for a year extension from the authorities.
The government authorities introduced the EWS Quota earlier this year by demanding all the central universities to increase their total number of seats per course by 25% to incorporate 10% EWS Quota in the coming two years. Recently, IITs have raised a request to the Ministry of Human Resource Development regarding the same. IITs failed to implement the EWS Quota in their system and want an additional year. The joint decision of Extension was taken at the meeting of IITs Joint Admission Board held on 15th September 2019.
Sources claim that the meeting was specially conducted to discuss the matter of GEN-EWS implementation in the academic session of 2020. Infrastructural Constraints are the major reasons for the setback. Lack of space to accommodate extra students in the approaching session of 2020 has resulted in an extension request to the Ministry of Human Resouces Development. The requesting letter suggests shifting of the EWS implementation bar from 2 years to 3 years all the IITs.

Prakash Jvadekar, Former HRD Minister said that the government will ensure that the increase in the total number of seats at central universities does not affect the number of seats for General, ST, SC and OBC categories. In order to introduce EWS in the system without making any seat deductions, IITs have to increase the student intake by 6708 in total. This year, IITs added round about 2300 seats and plan to add more in the coming years.
In defence, IIT authorities said that they introduced a supernumerary quota for girls due to which they are unable to intake more students at the moment. The application for deadline shift would be sent to MHRD in the coming week.

Many Indian Universities in Uttrakhand, Maharashtra, and Delhi have incorporated the GEN-EWS Quota already. Top institutes like Delhi University, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, Ambedkar University Delhi,IIM Nagpur, etc have successfully implemented the EWS Quota.
