IITs to Add More Seats for B.Tech and M.Tech Courses

The Indian Institutes of Technology are likely to consider a proposal to increase seats for B.Tech and M.Tech courses. There is also a proposal to increase intake for research programmes. The decision will be taken at a meeting of IIT Council. The meeting is scheduled to take place on August 23, 2016.

Currently, around 72,000 students are pursuing various courses at 23 IITs across the country. The HRD Ministry is planning to bring a proposal to increase the intake to one lakh over the next three years. According to the proposal, a total number of 10,000 seats will be increased per year. On the other hand, teaching faculties will be appointed on par with the increase in the number of seats.

To achieve this target, the IITs must waive off the condition which mandates the students to stay on the campus. The institutes must take steps on admitting more non-resident students. So that, the institutes need not develop infrastructure in the hostels. If this proposal is taken into consideration by the IIT Council, it will result in the biggest increase in seats across all the IITs.

The council will also look into a new project title ‘Vishwajeet’ which applies to all the IITs. According to this project, the IITs will get assistance to reach the top 100 in the Global University ranks by 2018 and top 50 by 2020. Under this project, the institutes will get additional funds and support.
