IITs to Compress the M.Tech Programme; Students to get Degree in a Year
- IIT Council has approved the proposal of starting year-long M.Tech programmes.
- The initiative is to encourage more students to pursue post-graduation.
- The 1-year M.Tech programme has been launched for working professionals.
The IIT Council has given its nod for starting year-long executive M.Tech programmes. These short term post-graduate courses will be provided to professionals working in the industry who don’t have the time to complete the two-year programme.
The decision was made at the IIT Council meeting held on April 27, 2017, headed by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar. This programme will enable the candidates to pursue their job along with the curriculum.
Apart from working professionals, the prestigious IITs will also invite its students and encourage them to opt for research work. Students will be eligible to apply for this programme after completing their B.Tech programme.
According to a source, the one-year M.Tech programme is an attempt to enhance the quality of research in the country. The IITs want more students to complete their masters’ degree as many of the students quit the programme midway on getting job offers and clearing entrance exams for jobs available at PSUs.

Currently, the IITs offer two-year M.Tech programmes that are available at a cost of Rs. 20,000 per year. For the compressed M.Tech programme, the IITs will be proposing fees equivalent to the market rate of the 2-year programme.
The course fee will be equivalent to the fees charged by the private institutes i.e. much more than the fees charged by government-funded IITs. The final fee structure will be decided by the board of governors of the 23 IITs in the country.

Currently, 72,000 students are enrolled in various IITs across the countries. Out of these, close to 14,000 students are pursuing M.Tech. The compressed M.Tech programme will be a boon for candidates who are working and wish to pursue post-graduation.
