Expressed through the ages by travellers, scholars and explorers who came here, India is known as the land of culture. This fact has been resonated through the records in ancient literature, social development through the ages as well as education. DU got an example of the awe that India inspires in people from the west when Adam Gilchrist visited the campus recently.

During his visit to the University of Delhi (DU), former Captain of the Australian cricket team, Adam Gilchrist, talked about his cultural experiences in India. Emphasizing on his visits here, he said that his trips to India have been a culturally enriching experience.

Gilchrist visited DU’s Conference Centre to deliver a talk on ‘Life as a Sportsman’. The event was organised by Kirori Mal College (KMC) in collaboration with Australia India Institute. He was welcomed by the choir of KMC who, to his delight, sang Saraswati Vandana.

Cherishing the experience, Gilchrist said that this is the beauty of India and the cultural value it adds. He also added that it is an experience that he finds hard to describe to his friends and colleagues back home.

Awareness and education is one aspect, India needs to create a ground for sportswomen to represent themselves. Gilchrist added that India should work on creating opportunities for girls to participate in various sports at the grass root level.

DU has one of the best universities in India and has been known to encourage its students to participate in sports at both national as well as international level. Apart from this DU also reserves seats for students who have represented their state or played a sport at national level. The young sportspersons have to undergo the ECA trials in order to secure admission in DU through sports quota.
