India is the second country across the globe, which is sending a large number of international students to educational institutes in the United States (US). According to the official information and statistics disclosed by Jamie Dragon (US Consulate General), China bagged the first spot in this regard. In 2016, 1,66,000 Indian students migrated to the USA for pursuing higher studies while the number of Chinese students in American institutes (according to 2016) is 3,20,000. China surpassed India around six years ago with the gap still increasing, he added.

Giving details about the city wise proportion of Indian students in US educational institutes, Jamie Dragon mentioned that Kolkata is the only metro city in India, which is lagging behind other metros. Students from Kolkata applying for student visa to pursue higher studies in the US are comparatively lower than other metro cities in India.

Jamie Dragon was addressing at USIEF-Education USA University Fair 2017, an event organised by the US-India Educational Foundation on October 29, 2017, at Kolkata. A total number of 21 universities from the United States took part in the fair and interacted with around 100 PG, UG and school students from Kolkata. Representatives from these universities also expressed their views on the proportion of Indian students in US institutes or US universities.

According to official data disclosed by Jamie Dragon, business and engineering are two most popular subjects among international students. For instance, a reputed university in the US has more than 4,500 international students which receives fresh applications from at least 500 to 600 international students every year.
