India Shall Aim for a Major Place in Higher Education: UGC Chairman

India is aiming for a top place in terms of higher education in future as better funding and realisation of quality education are in the offing. Chairperson of UGC, Professor Virender Singh Chauhan, made the statement while addressing the students at the ninth convocation ceremony of Ravenshaw University, located in Cuttack.

During his address, Professor VS Chauhan urged the students to grab the opportunity as the higher education system in the country is undergoing major changes with the invention of new technologies in education.

Adding further, UGC Chairperson mentioned that education is not merely making students capable of getting jobs. Education is something that is associated with the training of the mind. Apart from what students had learned in the classroom, interacting with the people outside the class gives more exposure to students, he added. According to Professor VS Chauhan, education means learning from others and appreciating other’s views with an objective to have a sense of entitlement.

During the ninth convocation ceremony of Ravenshaw University, over 64 students were awarded the Ph.D. degree. A total number of 30 students who exhibited outstanding academic performances during academic session 2016-17 were awarded gold medals.

Today, digital education, digital courses and smart classrooms are playing a vital role in bringing a new era to the educational system. In future, higher learning institutes in the country will offer more skill-based courses. For instance, engineering institutes across the country will conduct induction programme from the next academic session through which students will be trained in English language, computer skills and others.
