Only One-Fifth of 25,000 Patents Approved by Indian Institutes in 10 Years

Minister of Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan said on Tuesday that a total of 25,200 patent applicants have been filed by various institutes in India from 2009 t0 2019.

Indian research and technology institutes filed more than 25,000 patent applications in a span of ten years. Out of over 25,000, only one-fifth were sanctioned, informed the government to the Parliament on Tuesday.

Responding to a question asked in the Rajya Sabha, Harsh Vardhan, the incumbent minister at the Ministry of Science and Technology said that a total of 25,200 patent applicants have been filed by various institutes in India from 2009 t0 2019 (till November 24).

The Minister also said that 2,413 patent applications were filed by The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Another 3,751 applications were filed by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) , 2,016 were filed by the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and 998 were filled by the Defence Reseach and Development Organisation (DRDO).

5.089 patents were approved amongst the 25,200 applications and a major part of it went to the CSIR, followed by the DRDO, the IITs and lastly, the NITs. The number of applications filed by these institutes/organisations have been determined as 1,917, 519, 519 and 11 respectively, he informed.

In this period, patents filed by universities like Anna University (13) and GB Pant University (14) were also approved.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research also known as CSIR was set up in September 1942. It is an autonomous body which is the country’s largest research and development organisation.

CSIR works with a number of science and technology subjects including oceanography, environmental engineering, drugs, nanotechnology, biotechnology, aeronautics, chemicals, IT, and more.
