Indian School of Hospitality Moves Classes Online As Haryana Locked Down Due to Coronavirus
As a response to Haryana government closing schools and colleges till 31 March, the Indian School of Hospitality (ISH) has shifted classes for all of its eight batches online from 16 March. The investments in technology made by the institute has helped students incur 0 loss of classes.
The Haryana state government ordered schools and colleges to shut down till 31 March last week due to help stop the spread of Coronavirus. While it was a necessary step, to stop the operation of educational institutions for 2 weeks would have meant a loss of precious time for the students. And now that the lockdown has been extended till 15 April, many schools and colleges are busy working with their teachers and staff to shift the classes online.
The Indian School of Hospitality (ISH), Gurgaon has moved all of its classes online without interruption. Due to the institute being prepared with all of the necessary tools required, it was able to start online classes from 16 March itself and did not let students lose even a single class of study.
Dilip Puri, the Chairman of ISH, said that the institute started preparing for the shift to online classes when the Delhi government announced a shutting down of their schools and they expected Haryana government to follow suit.
Now, ISH is running classes for all of its eight batches online without a hiccup in the process. The courses offered by ISH include a bachelor's course in Hospitality Management and a number of other Diploma and Certificate programmes in Culinary Arts and Pastry & Bakery.
Despite being just a 2-year-old institute of hotel management, ISH was able to shift its classes online so quickly and seamlessly because of its investments in cutting-edge technology when it was starting out.

The institute has an ensemble of tools and technological aids to help in conducting online classes. Equipped with Samsung Flipboards, Smart Boards, Zoom, Lumens Cameras and has with mikes placed at every desk in every classroom, it certainly is one of the most technologically-advanced hotel management colleges in India.
The whole online classroom has been designed to be as interactive as a physical classroom. Students can participate in discussions and have to follow formal dress code while appearing for the classes. Mr Puri, giving out more information on the shift, said that they are seeing higher student attendance in online classes than physical classes. He added that after the test sessions are over, the teachers will also be able to deliver the classes directly from their homes.
Use of technology for learning and learning in a virtual environment is not considered very seriously in India but the current scenario has forced not only schools and colleges but also government organisations to consider online education. One can certainly expect that the impact of the Coronavirus outbreak on education in India will have long-lasting effects.
