According to the latest report of AIHES (All India Higher Education Survey, the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education across India has gone up by 0.7%. In 2015-16, the GER was 24.5%, and it has increased to 25.2% in 2016-17.

GER is regarded as a statistical measure for determining the total number of students enrolled in research, postgraduate and undergraduate level studies within India. GER is expressed as a percentage of the population. India is aiming to achieve 30% GER by 2020.

Major Highlights: -

  • Currently, the GER of some of the top countries like the USA is 85.8%.
  • The highly populated country in the world, i.e., China’s GER is 43.39%.
  • In India, there has also been an increase in the number of universities from 799 to 864.
  • As far as states concerned, Tamil Nadu topped the list with 46.9% GER in higher education, and Bihar was at the bottom of the list with just 14.9% GER.
  • As far as the average number of students enrolled in colleges, Puducherry topped the list with an average of 549 students enrolled in each college.
  • On an average, a total number of 483 students enrolled in each college in Telangana.
  • In Karnataka, an average of 381 students enrolled in each college.
  • Puducherry has the college density of 49, followed by Telangana with 59 and 53 in Karnataka.
  • In terms of density of colleges, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar are at the bottom of the list.
  • The enrolment of international students in Indian institutes did not witness a significant rise.
  • The number of international students enrolled in Indian institutes improved from 45,424 to 47,575.
