India’s Top Institutes Fail in FSSAI Food Safety Audit
- FSSAI conducted Food Safety Audit in some of the top educational institutes in India.
- Among the premier institutes, only IIT Roorkee and IIM Ahmedabad passed the audit.
Recently, FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) has conducted Food Safety Audit in higher educational institutes across the country. The audit was conducted to figure out the quality of food provided to students in the educational institutes. Some of the popular institutes that were a part of Food Safety Audit were: -
- IISc Bangalore
- IISER Kolkata
- IIT Guwahati
- IIT Madras
- IIT Bombay
- IIT Delhi
- IIT Roorkee
- AIIMS Delhi
- AIIMS Jodhpur
- IIM Kozhikode
- IIM Ahmedabad
FSSAI assessed the following in these institutes: -
- Cafeterias
- Hostel Kitchens
- Canteens
- Guest House Kitchens

The assessment was done on six parameters including: -
- Personal Hygiene
- Maintenance and Sanitation
- Control of Operations
- Design and Facilities
- Training and Record Keeping
Being the premier institutes of India, one can expect that these institutes provide quality food in hostels apart from providing quality education. As per the audit conduct by FSSAI, only IIT Roorkee and IIM Ahmedabad passed the audit. The canteens and kitchens at these two institutes are maintaining the quality of food as per the standards of FSSAI. The food provided by these institutes is hygienic and good for health.

Except for IIT Roorkee and IIT Ahmedabad, all the other institutes that were a part of audit (as mentioned above) failed in FSSAI Food Safety Audit. The unhygienic conditions found by FSSAI in these institutes are: -
- Overflowing sinks where utensils are cleaned
- Choked Bathrooms
- Kitchen staff wearing shoes in kitchen
- Reheating of food several times
- Rodent droppings around the kitchen
- Cleaned utensils retaining food residue
It is time for the institutes that failed in Food Safety Audit to improve the standards and provide hygienic food to the students.
