Institute of Eminence: IIT Delhi Plans to Improve Global Rankings
- IIT Delhi has plans to enrol at least 25% foreign students and hire international faculty. The institute also has plans to construct a hostel for international students that could accommodate at least 300 students.
Recently, MHRD has released the list of six institutes that are eligible for Institute of Eminence (IoE) status. IIT Delhi was also one of the public institutes that featured in the list. IoE status enables the institutes to work towards internationalisation of education. Under the IoE scheme, the selected institutes will have greater autonomy in decision-making.
On the other hand, these institutes will also receive a grant of Rs. 1,000 crore over the next five years for developing academic landscape. IoE status will further help the institutes to make an impact in global rankings.
IIT Delhi has extensive plans to improve the functioning of the institute. Director of IIT Delhi, Mr. Ramgopal Rao gave details about the reformative measures introduced in the premier institute.

IIT Delhi Director revealed that the premier institute does not have changes at the undergraduate level, but the institute is considering several reforms at the PG (Post Graduate) level. At present, over 60% students at IIT Delhi are enrolled in PG courses. The institute is planning to hike fees for PG courses. Already, the fee structure for two courses including executive M.Tech and sponsored Ph.D has been revised, he added.
IIT Delhi is also planning to increase the enrolment of international students from 1% to 25%. The major focus is to attract foreign students from ASEAN, SAARC, Gulf and African nations. At present, the institute has seats that are enough only for Indian students. If the institute wants to increase the enrolment of foreign students, it has to create supernumerary seats and improve infrastructure & hostel facilities.

IIT Delhi has plans to construct a hostel for international students that could accommodate at least 300 students. The premier institute has started constructing an AC hostel that will accommodate 1,000 students.
