The IIIT Amendment Bill 2020 has been passed by the Government in Rajya Sabha today giving the status of "Institutions of National Importance" to the newly established 5 IIITs - IIIT Surat, IIIT Bhopal, IIIT Bhagalpur, IIIT Agartala and IIIT Raichur. These institutions have been set up on the Public-Private Partnership Model. The bill was earlier passed on the 20th of March in Lok Sabha. Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the Minister of Education, introduced the Bill in the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) on 21st September 2020. Currently, there are 25 IIITs in India out of which 15 are operating under the Public-Private Partnership Model and 5 IIITs are being run by the Central Government.
These 5 IIITs will now have the right to legally issue Doctorate, Degree, Diploma and more. The bill received support from the Biju Janata Dal Rajya Sabha MP Dr Sasmit Patra who said that this move would open the doors of these institutes to many students and will boost a strong research base in the Infirmation Technology sector in the country.
The Union Cabinet earlier granted its approval to confer IoE (Institute of Eminence) status to five IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology) across the country. The Bill to confer IoE status to these institutes was introduced in Lok Sabha. With the new status, these IIITs will have the authority to use the nomenclature of B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D degree. The following IIITs have bagged the IoE status -
- IIIT Raichur
- IIIT Agartala
- IIIT Bhagalpur
- IIIT Bhopal
- IIIT Surat
The Union Cabinet also approved the ex-post facto to 21 director posts of IIITs.
The Union Cabinet headed and chaired by PM of India approved the IIITs Laws (Amendment) Bill 2020. The above IIITs run under PPP model (Public-Private Partnership) model. With the IoE status, these IIITs will be empowered to award degrees independently.
The IoE status to above IIITs will also help the institutes to focus more on research and attract enough students for the same purpose. This will improve the research base of the respective IIITs.
The above IIITs have been functioning as Societies that are registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. With IoE status, these IIITs come under PPP model.
