International Student Enrolments at IIT Bombay Witness a Drop in 2017-18
IIT Bombay has witnessed a sharp drop in the number of international students enrolling during the academic session 2017-18. At present, IIT Bombay is planning to increase its revenue by attracting more international students.
IIT Bombay is now free to fix and charge fees with respect to international students without government’s involvement, as the premier institute of technology has been selected for the ‘Institute of Eminence’ status. At present, IIT Bombay is planning to increase its revenue by attracting international students. However, the number of foreign students enrolled in IIT Bombay during the academic session 2017-18 has dropped.
In 2016-17, a total number of 100 international students joined IIT Bombay to pursue various courses. On the other hand, the number of international student enrolments witnessed a drop in 2017-18. As per the official data of IIT Bombay, only 56 foreign students joined IIT Bombay to pursue courses at various levels in 2017-18.

The IIT Bombay official data reveals that most international students prefer pursuing PG or Ph.D. courses at IIT Bombay rather than UG engineering courses. For instance, 22 international students joined M.Tech course and seven students joined Ph.D. at IIT Bombay in 2016-17. In the same academic year, 69 foreign students enrolled for other project works at IIT Bombay.
In 2017-18, 16 international students joined PG engineering courses, four students opted for UG engineering courses and five for Ph.D. Only 31 international students enrolled in other project work at IIT Bombay. Compared to 2016-17, the number of international students joining IIT Bombay has declined by half.

According to sources, IIT Bombay earns Rs. 41 lakh from international students every year. In the next five years, IIT Bombay is expecting a Rs. 1 crore revenue through international student enrolments. Usually, students from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the US join IIT Bombay to pursue UG/ PG/ Ph.D. courses or for project work.
