IoE Status: HRD, UGC to Brief Heads of Institutes on Contours of Scheme
- MHRD is actively working on certifying Institutes of Higher Learning with the Institutes of Eminence (IoE) status. Applications are open for the next three months.
- UGC and MHRD will convene a meeting to give detailed aspects of the scheme.
Ministry of Human Resource and Development and the University Grants Commission have decided to host a meeting with the heads of institutes of higher learning that are eligible to apply for the Institute of Eminence (IoE) tag. The main objective of the meeting is to explain the contours of the scheme.
On September 13, 2017, UGC had initiated the registration process seeking applications from all the institutes that are keen to enter the list of top 100 global institutes with the government’s assistance. The registration process will be open for the next three months. After the deadline, a high-level committee will evaluate all the entries and finalize the names of 20 institutes for IoE status by March 2018.

Among public institutes, 11 public deemed to be universities, 32 state universities, 12 central universities, 4 IISERs, 13 IIMs, 13 NITs and 19 IITs are eligible to apply for IoE status.
Mr. K Sharma (Higher Education Secretary) and Mr. Chauhan (Acting UGC Chairman) will convene the meeting with the heads of higher learning institutes (as mentioned above) in person and via video conference on October 23 and October 25, 2017. The meeting with the heads of eligible private institutes will be held on October 27, 2017. An invitation has been sent to all the eligible private institutes. Inviting private entities will be initiated by MHRD through an advertisement in newspapers this week.
An official associated with MHRD indicated that it is a great opportunity for educational institutes to get clarity on the contours of the IoE scheme.
