Ira Singhal an honor to womanhood

Ira Singhal is now the headline of the media. When she topped the tough IAS examination in 2015 she became the first physically challenged woman to top the civil services exam in the general category. Her’s is a story of struggle, hard work, determination and courage which will always inspire people in their pursuit of success especially of our girl students. When her result flashed in the websites, the social network sites a buzzed with ‘Congrats’ and ‘Kudos’ messages. She instantly became a story for household discussion and inspiration. She not only showed to the world that a woman can also be equal with man in all respects but also proved that a disability can never be a cause of any retardation. Ira had completed her school from Lorento Convent and then she finished her class 12th examination from Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan. A native of Delhi she likes to play food ball and reading book. She did her MBA in marketing from Faculty of Management Studies Delhi University. Before that she had done her BE in Computer Engineering from Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) New Delhi. Her stint with corporate world begun when she joined as a marketing intern in beverage giant The Coca-Cola and later as a manager in Cadbury. She has also the rich experience of working as the Spanish teacher. “She is a science graduate and when she joined a multinational company she did the work of five managers together and she pointed out the gross anomalies in the finance department within sort span of time. She could have continued to work in Multinational Companies and earn the handsome amount, but she chose to appear civil service examination and do something for the country. Because being an IAS officer, one gets the lifetime opportunity to serve the country and our citizen,” said her father Rajender Singhal in a TV interview. Interestingly, she had cleared the IAS examination in the year 2010 but due to her disability she did not get posting. But she took her case to the Central Administrative Service and it was only last year she was given a post. She suffers from Scoliosis, a spine-related disorder, which disrupts her arm movement. Right now she is posted as Assistant Commissioner in the Customs & Excise department of the Indian Revenue Services, and going to join IAS very soon. All the best to Ira.
