ISRO to Launch Satellite Made by IIT- B Students on September 26

Among the other eight satellites to be launched by ISRO on Monday, will be the satellite designed by the students of IIT-B. The name of the satellite is Pratham and will be launched by ISRO along with their weather satellite in Mumbai.

The satellite was conceptualised by the students in the year 2008 and after working hard on the same for more than eight years, it will finally be live on Monday. Some of the important features of the satellite are as follows:

• Weight: 10 kg
• The size of the satellite is so small that it can fit within a cube of 30 cm
• Lifespan of the same has been estimated to be of 4 months.

While making of this satellite, students got the chance to work during various stages of the building of a satellite. The stages ranging from designing, analysis, fabrication and testing, everything was taken care of by the students, said the official. Also, various universities can now collaborate with the institute and contribute in the space sector by sharing knowledge and facilities.

Some of the colleges with which the institute has collaborated are UCL London and IPGP Paris.

Pratham has been designed in such a manner that it will emit signals when it will pass over India in the space which can be detected by any university with a small ground station. This will further help in spreading awareness among the students.

The ultimate goal behind the satellite is mentioned below:

• Acquiring knowledge in the field of satellite and space technology
• To fully design it by the students of IIT-B,
• Launch it and measure TEC of ionosphere above India and Paris
• Involve students from other universities in the satellite project

The satellite finally got ready after eight years. ISRO helped in making the satellite a success by providing the students with technical help in terms of testing and guidance and the integration of the flight model of Pratham for which tests have been carried out in ISAC, Bangalore and SHAR, Sriharikota.
