Jadavpur University's Eminence Tag to Cost Bengal Govt. 2000 Crore
The West Bengal Education Minister has criticised the Centre for notifying them with the procedure at the last minute. 2,000 Crores among the total 3,000 Crores to be contributed by the State.
Jadavpur University to lose the tag of Institute of Eminence (IoE) if Bengal Government does not agree to bear a cost of 2,000 crores to retain the tag as per the sources claim. The Indian Union government has reportedly written to the Cheif Secretary of West Bengal this week, informing the state of its share of the cost for Jadavpur University to be awarded the prestigious ‘eminence’ status.
The recognition is granted on the basis of a list made by the Union government Ministry of Human Resource Department. If the West Bengal Government disagrees to pay the amount, the IoE tag will go to the next institute which features on the waitlist which is Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) followed by Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
The letter sent to the West Bengal Government by the Union Government has said that the total cost for meeting the IoE standard for Jadavpur University will be 3,000 crore rupees out of which, 1,000 crores or 50%-75% of expenses will be borne by the Central government depending on whichever is less. In this case, only 1,000 Crore will be given by the Union Government. The total financial transactions to be done within a span of 5 years to retain the IoE Tag.

Last week, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced Jadavpur’s name, among 14 other institutions selected for the IoE status. The Education Minister of West Bengal had criticised the Centre for allegedly attaching a last-minute amendment that the state government would have to contribute a matching grant.
