The trend in admissions in Jadavpur University Engineering Department started well in comparison to other engineering college admissions in the state of West Bengal. However, coming at the end, the traits show that the speed has slothed down in Jadavpur comparing to other engineering colleges in West Bengal for admissions through WBJEE Counselling.

The third phase of the counselling process, which ended 20th July 2019, has seen a large number of seats being vacant in engineering colleges in West Bengal. Among the institutes, Jadavpur University has seen more than 20% seats of its engineering department go vacant. As per official data, 261 seats out of a total of 1273 seats have been left vacant after the completion of the admission process on 6th August 2019. The data also shows that the core engineering courses such as Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineering courses have seen a large number of vacancies in terms of their seats. With the highest, 29 seats, vacant in Mechanical Engineering, and the lowest, 7 seats, in Metallurgical Engineering courses still available at the varsity.

Many people have not come to the university even after the selection of them for admissions. Statistics show that among the 1,273 total seats in Jadavpur, in the first phase, the number of filled seats was 1,248, in the second phase, the admission number reduced to 1,228 and at the third phase, the admissions in the course have touched the lower mark of 1,191. It is a disheartening event for the WBJEE Board that students are not opting for admissions in JU even after getting through. The experts have said that there is a new trend coming up. According to the statistics, 80,580 candidates passed the WBJEE Examination out of which, a number more than 35,000 have registered for WBJEE Counselling. Though the number is higher this year. The new trend in engineering has surpassed the demand of the conventional engineering courses like mechanical and civil, however, the numbers have shown that there is an increasing trend for Information Technology (IT) courses such as Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics. The sector for Automobile Engineering, Bio-Medical, Pharmacy and Food Technology has also reported high demand among students.

Jadavpur University has also announced that it will be conducting a 'decentralised counselling process' which will be held on 16th, 18th as well as 19th August 2019 with the sole intent to fill up the vacant seats available at the varsity. However, the varsity has stated that 90% of the seats that will be held through the counselling process will be reserved for the students of the state.

The trend for admissions has made concerned authorities anxious. In the previous years, a total of 250 to 300 seats used to be reported vacant but that has not reported admission down-surge in the premier institutions like Jadavpur, unlike this year.

The university officials have said that most of the students have filled Jadavpur University as their preference for admissions in WBJEE counselling. But the students have not appeared in the university for registration and document verification process which is the final step for admissions. If the trait continues, there is a chance that around 150 seats will remain vacant. The university was trying to fill all the seats after 3rd counselling through centralised counselling only as they do not want to conduct a de-centralised counselling process on their own. But the adverse picture has been portrayed at the 3rd round as well.

The university official has said that the admission process of NITs is underway now. The former vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University and former chairman of WBJEEB, Mr Siddharta Dutta has said that there is a trend of holding an admission in any college before the premiere institutes are finalised. Many students are leaving engineering and shifting to other courses, if looked carefully, it will be seen that the students previously took admissions in specialisation with low employability potential.

The General manager of JIS Group of Institutions, West Bengal, Mr Vidyut Majumdar has said that this year, students seemed to have lost interest in conventional engineering courses like Mechanical, Civil, Electrical etc. He added that there is high demand for the courses of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and other Information Technology related courses.
