Jadavpur University to Setup a ‘Finishing School’ to Make Students Job-Ready

Jadavpur University is gearing up to set up a ‘Finishing School’ to make students conversant in English. Through this school, a short term course will be launched from the next academic session. Under this course, the students will undergo mock interviews and will be trained to put across their ideas in English.

The main objective of the course is to make students better equipped to face placement interviews. Suranjan Das, Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, proposed the idea of establishing a ‘Fishing School’. The course would be industry-friendly, and the students will receive training to raise their chances of making the cut in interviews.

‘Finishing Schools’ will cover various topics which include English skills, developing new ideas, developing competitive spirit among the students and methods to put across innovative ideas. The training will enable the students to secure excellent jobs in the campus placements.

Emphasis will also be given to improving body language and prepare resumes. Mock interviews will be conducted to make students aware of corporate skills and etiquette. The ‘Finishing School’ is not mandatory for all the students and hence it is optional for those who are only interested. The school will get funding from Technical-Education department. The main aim of this initiative is to bridge the gap between classroom and industry.

Suranjan Das further indicated that the proposal for setting up ‘Fishing School’ has been sent for approval and will be implemented soon. He further added that engineering colleges must start finishing schools to make engineering students industry-ready.
