Just before Jamia Milia Islamia turns 100 in 2020, the Vice-chancellor has already created history by becoming the first Woman VC of Jamia Milia Islamia. Now she is planning to introduce futuristic courses at the University so that the students can get more Industry oriented courses to develop their skills and employability. Akhtar is also working extensively for setting up a medical college in Jamia Milia Islamia which has been pending for long. She informed that the medical college is not only at the top of her agenda but also many futuristic courses are also on her checklist. Other than that, she is working to increase the women enrolment number in Jamia and upgrading the existing courses as per industry requirements. Akhtar says that even though they have paramedical courses, JMI does not have a medical college which she wants to be established in her tenure. Najma Akhtar is an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University and got a chance to study with the commonwealth scholarship. She aims to introduce a few more courses in JMI which are missing currently such as design and fashion.

On the lines of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and National School of Design (NSD), she wants to add those courses in JMI to give the university a more diverse outlook. She also adds that she has plans to add new age technical courses such as Blockchain, Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT) and upgrade the already existing courses. She said that she wants to lay emphasis on the soft skill building among the students and the development of entrepreneurship and analytical skills among the students.

Prof. Najma Akhtar, who is a vocal supporter of students imbibing the qualities of extracurricular affairs said to the media that students should not think that the University is only there to serve degrees rather build their humanitarian personality by offering courses in various languages, literature and contributing to all spheres of life including cross-disciplinary arts, humanities, social studies.

Prof. Akhtar is eyeing for ranking improvements also. She says that there has been this buzz to judge the quality of an institute with rankings. She said that the institute had faired in 2018 NIRF rankings and she aims for more by improving the quality of teaching by introducing innovative pedagogy, trained teachers, increase women participation, and build international collaborations and student exchange programs.

Prof. Najma Akhtar said that there must be more women-oriented courses in JMI such as Nursing and Hospital Management which are currently missing in the institute. She informed that the percentage of female students in Jama Milia Islamia is now 36% and she hopes the number will go up to 50% at least. She said that her focus will be mainly girls from weaker socio-economic backgrounds.
