Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Annual Convocation: President Kovind Addresses the Students
JMI annual convocation for the 2019 year took place on October 30, 2019. Jamia starts with its three-day celebrations to mark its 99 Foundation Day including Annual convocation
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) hosts its annual convocation on October 30, 2019. President Ram Nath Kovind was the Chief Guest at the ceremony. During the annual convocation of JMI students who have passed their exams in the year, 2017 and 2018 was conferred degrees and diplomas. A day before the convocation, on October 29, the University has observed its 99th Foundation Day.
Highlights from President Kovind's Speech at JMI
The president of India, Mr Ram Nath Kovind while addressing the convocation ceremony of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), said that the government is developing necessary changes education ecosystems for adapting to the challenges of today. He said the University Social Responsibility (USR) should be emphasised to connect with the development of every section of the society like Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Mr Kovind informed that one of the most important objectives of the New Education Policy is to build India as a ‘Knowledge Superpower.’ The policies are being made keeping that in mind as proposed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
He added that the world is now aware of the educational excellence in India and making proper use of the talent must be ensured by all the educational institutes. And expectations are higher from the top institutes like Jamia. The fact that JMI has adopted 5 villages has been brought up by the president and he asked if the university can adopt more villages.
He urged the students to go to the villages adopted by the university and understand their issues and run awareness campaigns on literacy, vaccination, nutrition of all children and more. He said that students should also make the villagers aware of the government schemes taken up for their development purposes. This will not only develop a communication between the rural class and the students but also help the students to understand the rural needs.
Jamia Milla Islamia 99 Foundation Day
JMI 99 Foundation celebrations started on 29th October 2019 with the hoisting of flag by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar. She addressed the Jamia Community in the Foundation Day Inaugural Function which is traditionally hosted by the students of Jamia Middle School.
The highlights of JMI Foundation Day include cultural programmes, Nukkad Natak, Business Idea Competition among others.
The previous annual convocation ceremony of Jamia Millia Islamia took place on April 16, 2018, on a grand scale. Over 4,600 students received their degrees and diplomas at the convocation ceremony. Among the graduating students, 4,372 were conferred diplomas and degrees, while 322 students received Ph.D. degrees. Toppers from various faculties of the varsity were awarded gold medals. Among the winners of gold medals, most of the students were girls.
Union Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Harsha Vardhan was the Chief Guest, who while addressing the students motivated them to work hard while pursuing their future endeavours.

Dr. Harsha Vardhan urged the graduating students to come up with innovative ideas for nation-building. In the current scenario, students must inculcate and practice the power of truth, compassion, love, honest and karma. These qualities will enable them to become successful in their career with outstanding values. Apart from focusing on the career, it is the responsibility of the students to contribute to the nation, he stated.
Congratulating the graduating students, Dr. Harsha Vardhan asked them to work towards achieving the vision of the Prime Minister of India in building New India by 2022. For achieving the purpose, the government is ready to provide necessary support including funding for incubating the ideas, he added.
Dr. Harsha Vardhan also appreciated the JMI for its outstanding academic performance and its presence in national and international rankings. Nanotechnology and Nanoscience Centre of JMI is impeccable and the performance of the varsity in promoting research is appreciable, he highlighted.
Vice-Chancellor of JMI, Professor Talat Ahmed presented the annual report of the varsity’s performance. The varsity has already been offering 254 courses in various disciplines. From this academic session, the varsity will offer 9 new courses, he explained.

- Certificate Course in Ticketing & Air Fare Construction
- Diploma in the Korean Language
- PG Diploma in Labour Law
- M.Sc in Disaster Management and Climate Sustainability Studies
Governor of Manipur, Dr. Hepatulla, who was also present on the occasion, enlightened the students on the illustrious history of JMI and its vital role in freedom struggle.
LLM (Master of Law) topper of JMI, Sumaria Imtiaz was awarded Dr. Ghulam E Vahanvati Gold Medal and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 for her outstanding academic performance.
