Jammu, Goa, Tirupathi among Six Places to Get IITs
Mr. Prakash Javadekar said that the government will do not resort to any activities which will lower the standards of IITs.
Under the Technology (Amendment) Bill 2016 which was approved by Rajya Sabha on 2-August-2016, six new IITs will be set up across India. The places include:-
- Jammu
- Goa
- Tirupathi
- Palakkad (Kerala)
- Dharwad (Karnataka)
- Bhilai (Chattisgarh)
Recently, a bill was passed by Lok Sabha for the establishment of Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad within the ambit of proposed act.

Replying to a debate on the bill in Rajya Sabha, Union HRD Minister, Mr. Prakash Javadekar said the government will not resort to any activities which will lower the standards of IITs. The IITs are centres for excellence and they will remain the same. The government will take all the necessary steps to make IITs world class institutes. The maintenance of quality is very important.

Mr. Jai Ram Ramesh raised the issue regarding the autonomy for IITs. The HRD Minister replied that the ministry is not at all a board member of IITs. The ministry is not even represented on Board of Governors. The ministry only facilitates the finance and funding for the premier institutes. He assured that there won't be any financial constraints for the growth of IITs.

He mentioned that the government is working on a scheme for financing higher education. Importance will be given to research and infrastructure requirements.
