JIPMER Karaikal to Get Rs. 491.7 Crore Worth Infrastructure
- Jawaharlal Institute of Post Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) Karaikal will soon get a new permanent campus as the budget and land for the same has been approved.
- MBBS course seat intake will be increased to 100 from 50 thereafter.
The Government of India has allocated Rs. 491.7 crore for JIPMER, located in Karaikal. The grant has been made for the development of infrastructure in this premier centrally funded institute. Standing Finance Committee of the premier medical college has made the proposal for the allocation of funds to JIPMER Karaikal which has been further approved by the Union Health Ministry.

With the allocation of Rs. 491.7 crore, the construction of the residential campus, academic wing and hostels for students pursuing medical courses in Karaikal can be completed at JIPMER Karaikal. The Government of Puducherry has allocated two sites for this purpose free of cost. The state government has allocated 41.47 acres of land in Kovilpatthu (near Karaikal) while 38.14 acres of land has been earmarked for the college on Kamaraj Salai (in Karaikal).

The construction of residential and academic complexes will be done on these two sites (as mentioned above). The building owned by PWD Puducherry at Arasalar was handed over to JIPMER. On the other hand, JIPMER will spend Rs. 30 crore towards improving patient management facilities in the government hospital.
Once the construction of the permanent campus is completed, JIPMER could increase the intake of MBBS course seats from 50 to 100.
The Karaikal branch of JIPMER was opened in 2016, and since then, the institute has been functioning in an improvised building with 50 students in MBBS course. The construction of a permanent campus with necessary infrastructure will help JIPMER to deliver quality education.
Every year, JIPMER conducts a separate entrance exam for the admission to MBBS course.
