JIPMER to Shake Hands with National, International Institutes for Research

The Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) takes health research on a different level. The institute is planning to partner with several national and international research institutions in order to get aid to carry out basic research projects in health sciences in Indian framework.

S.C. Parija director of JIPMER said that with this collaboration the institute aims to develop cost effective diagnostic tests and treatment protocols as per the needs of the Indian population.

He also said that Christina Mary Mariaselvam, a student of the Department of Clinical Immunology in JIPMER, has successfully achieved dual Ph.D from JIPMER and the University Sorbonne in Paris (France). Christina is the only Indian to achieve this merit, till date.

Christina’s subject of research was `Immunogenetics Rheumatoid Arthritis` in the South Indian Tamil population, genetic polymorphism of genes involved in immuno inflammatory response in relation to phenotype markers.

Dr Vir Singh Negi, Clinical Immunologist and Head of Department of Clinical Immunology in JIPMER was her mentor and guided her through the research. Christina also worked under the guidance of Dr Dominique Charron, the World Authority on HLA and Transplant and Professor Jean Dausset of the Department of Immunology and Immunogenetics in St Louis Hospital, Paris.

She was awarded the Ph.D. degree from JIPMER in 2015 and from the University of Sorbonne Paris in 2016.

This is a bright opportunity for the research student as they can get to learn a lot from different universities all over the world under a common research framework agreement, said Dr Parija.
