JNU: Admission Process 2017 to Commence Soon Based on UGC Notification
After the verdict given by Delhi High Court, Ministry of Human Resource and Development also clarified that the regulations set by UGC are mandatory in nature and all the universities have to follow these regulations.
The authorities of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) announced on the official website of JNU that the admission process for the year 2017 would commence soon. However, the admission process will be based on the UGC gazette notification 2016. This year, the admission process has been delayed due to continuous protests from students and teachers against UGC gazette notification of 2016.
The students filed a petition in Delhi High Court against the UGC regulations and are the ones responsible for the delay in the admission process. They filed a petition against the new admission rules of M.Phil and Ph.D. courses.

Recently, the High Court of Delhi dismissed the petition filed by students and clarified that it is mandatory to follow the UGC regulations. The court further clarified that the new admission rules prescribed by University Grants Commission for the admission to M.Phil and Ph.D. courses are applicable to all the varsities. Therefore, the court termed the petition filed by students as infructuous.
The court also clarified that the varsity should not formulate its own policy against the rules and acts of University Grants Commission and it is legally impermissible.

Jawaharlal Nehru University has been witnessing continuous protests from the students for the past two and half months. The varsity adopted the UGC regulations on December 26, 2016, at the Academic Council meeting.
