Jawaharlal Nehru University has formulated a norm for the admission to M.Phil and Ph.D. courses in case of a tie between the two candidates. According to the guideline, if two or more candidates secured identical or same marks in the entrance examination and interview, the youngest candidates among them will be granted admission. Usually, JNU uses this criterion while allotting hostels.

JNU conducts entrance examination and personal interview for the admission to M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes. The applicants must secure at least 50% of marks in the entrance examination to be eligible for personal interview. The varsity prepares the final merit list only after the interview. Therefore, it is mandatory for the applicants to fare in both written test and personal interview.

An official of JNU indicated that the varsity uses the age criterion very rarely. There might be around one or two cases where the varsity has to rely on age criterion, i.e., allotting admission to the youngest candidate.

The norm adopted by JNU in this regard has not been received well by some of the officials. Some of them called the move as absurd. Earlier, the varsity allotted the admission to candidates who scored identical marks. The new admission rule of JNU lacks logic. The varsity could not deny admission to the candidate who cleared both written test and interview.

On the other hand, the University of Delhi grants admission to elder candidates in such cases. Usually, the varsity takes Bachelor’s or Master’s degree marks or percentage as the criterion in the case of a tie. If the tie still persists, the varsity relies on age criterion. However, Delhi University had not faced such kind of situations so far.
