JNU to Hold Second Convocation for Ph.D. Students after 46 Years

  • JNU is planning to hold the convocation in the last week of February or the first week of March 2018.

After 46 years of its first convocation, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has decided to hold the second convocation to confer Ph.D. degrees to students. Registrar of JNU, Mr. Pramod Kumar revealed that the exact date of the convocation ceremony would be finalised soon. The varsity is planning to hold the convocation in the last week of February or the first week of March 2018, he added.

Rector II of JNU, Mr. SC Garkoti explained that the process for the second convocation is initiated that will primarily focus on Ph.D. students. If there is a possibility with respect to resources, funds and infrastructure, it may be extended to the Master’s level as well. Ph.D. students spent the maximum time on campus and hence they have been given priority in terms of the convocation ceremony that will also strengthen the bond between the university and the outgoing students.

The first convocation ceremony of JNU took place in 1972. Popular actor, Balraj Sahni delivered the convocation address. During his address, Balraj stated that the progress of the country is in the hands of citizens. He motivated the students to become active citizens by addressing various issues in the society. Professor Kamal Mitra Choudhary, who joined JNU in 1972, recalled his memories from the first convocation ceremony.

The second convocation of JNU is expected to turn out to be historic and grand, as the varsity is hosting the ceremony after 46 years.
