2016 JEE (Advanced) result is out- the wait is over for B Tech/B Arch aspirants in IIT and NIT+ Institutions. So, what next? Students with a good ranking at JEE (Advanced) 2016 are waiting in anticipation for their counseling dates to find out which college they can take admission in. But have you heard about JoSAA, the only authority responsible for seat allocation to IIT’s, NIT’s, IIIT’s and other GFTI’s.

When the JEE Mains result was declared on April 2016, the top 2,00,000 (including all categories) had both their hands full. They got a chance to write JEE Advanced (for admission into IITs) by scoring minimum marks in JEE (Mains) 2016 and at the same time, they stood a chance to get admission to NIT+ institutes (NITs, IIITs (Triple-I-Ts) and Other-GFTIs).

But now, even as the JEE Advanced result is out, the real challenge of choosing course and college is about to begin. Should you choose course over college or vice versa, is a question that you will face while choosing seats in IIT, NIT, IIIT’s etc.

It is important to keep yourself abreast of the tricky rules of counselling. Remember, even if you are, somehow, not eligible for IIT or a desired branch in IITs, you may very well get a seat of your choice in one of the NIT + institutes with proven track record.

How does admission in 18 IITs and ISM, 31 NITs, 18 IIITs and 18 Other-GFTIs take place?

A Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has been set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to manage and regulate the joint seat allocation for admissions to 87 institutes for the academic year 2015-16. This includes 18 IITs, ISM, 31 NITs, 18 IIITs and 18 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs). Admission to all the academic programs offered by these Institutes will be made through a single platform. JoSAA is the ONLY authorized agency responsible for joint seat allocation.

Eligibility Criteria for admission into IITs and NIT+ institutes

Eligibility for IITs & ISM, NITs,authoritu IIITs [or Triple-I-Ts] and a few other technical Institutes funded fully or partially by Central or a State government [Other-GFTIs].is largely same.

On the basis of score in JEE (Main)-2016 and normalized score in Class 12th or equivalent qualifying exam (60% & 40% weightage respectively), separate rank lists will be prepared for admission to institutions other than IITs. This will be declared on or before 30th of June 2016. Only the All India Rank (AIR) is used for admissions to NITs/IIITs/CFTIs/SFIs/Others.

To get considered for IITs, apart from your score/rank, the following are important:

  • You should NOT have been admitted in an IIT/ISM OR even accepted the IIT/ISM seat by reporting at a reporting centre in the past.
  • If your admission at IITs or ISM was cancelled in the past, then you are NOT eligible.
  • If you have been admitted to a preparatory course in any of the IITs for the first time in 2015 can appear in JEE (Advanced) 2016. Even if you have paid seat acceptance fee but not accepted the seat by reporting at the reporting centre during joint seat allocation in 2015, you are eligible.
  • The candidates should satisfy at least one of the following two criteria for admission to IITs and ISM
  • Must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in the class XII (or equivalent) Board examination. The aggregate marks for SC, ST and PwD candidates should be at least 70%.
  • Must be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class XII (or equivalent) board examination.
  • The detailed instructions for filling in the choices and the seat allotment procedure will be made available by JoSAA through Seat Allotment Brochure.

The schedule of the joint seat allocation will be announced separately by JoSAA 2016. The list of courses that will be offered by the IITs and ISM for admission for the academic year 2016-17 will be made available at the time of online filling-in of choices.

2016 JEE Advanced Cut-off

Only if you score the minimum prescribed marks in each subject (10% for Gen) and in aggregate (30% for Gen), you will be included in the rank list of for IITs & ISM. The minimum prescribed marks varies with the category. Cut-off for different categories is as below:

  • General Category: 10% in each subject and 35% in aggregate
  • OBC (NCL): 9% in each subject and 31.5% in aggregate

Dual Reporting:
