Kannada University Takes No Action for Violating UGC Norms

Kannada University appointed 30 teaching and academic staff without checking their eligibility for the job. These 30 academicians did not meet the minimum qualification set by the UGC. However, no action has been taken by the state government and the Hampi Kannada University against them till now.

According to a report made by the Accountant General, it was found that in the year 1997, the University had appointed two professors, seven readers, seven teachers, 11 lecturers, a chief librarian and an assistant librarian without checking their eligibility criteria and later upon looking in the faculty Service Records, it was found out that these academicians did not pass under the UGC norms.

Also, according to the audit officer, it was found out that many of the appointed faculty had not passed the National Eligibility Test. Not only were these non-eligible candidates appointed, they were promoted as well. The university has now been asked by the government to relook in the entire recruitment process and give a valid explanation for the appointment and promotion of such faculty. Also, the university will have to take action regarding the same.

Later, in the year 2000-01 and 2001-02, the university’s actions were objected by the Accountant General again. Also a warning was given that in case of further such discrepancies, the vice chancellor will be held responsible for the appointment and promotion of the staff.

According to the current Vice-chancellor Mallika Ghanti, the decisions regarding the recruitment of the faculty were taken by the former VC Chandrashekhar Kambar and therefore she is not responsible for the same in any way. She also said that such matters should have been solved earlier at that time but the former VC ignored the warning of the AG and thus these matters are still pending till today.
